Common Questions

Before you book.

When is your season?

As a state-approved pheasant preserve we're open yearly from September 1st through March 31st. Our 2026–27 preserve season runs September 1, 2026 – March 31, 2027.

How does your pricing work?

We charge $50 per pheasant released, with a minimum of 15, plus $10 per hunter, per day. There's no charge per bird shot, so you decide how many pheasants go out before your hunt.

What's the daily limit?

The daily limit is 20 pheasants, 3 grouse and 3 chukars.

How many hunters can I bring?

There's no limit to the number of hunters. Birds are $50 each released and each hunter is $10 per day. Our online booking is set up for parties up to 12 — if your group is larger, give us a call at (605) 391-3895 and we'll set it up.

Do you provide dogs and a guide?

Yes. We provide at least one dog and a guide for each hunt. You're also welcome to bring your own dogs.

Is bird cleaning included?

Yes — animal cleaning is included with your hunt, and you keep the meat.

Can we hunt grouse too?

Yes. We have naturally raised sharp-tailed grouse on the ranch that can be hunted along with the pheasants, up to three per day.

Do I need a hunting license?

Yes — a valid South Dakota hunting license is required. You can purchase one through the South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks website before you arrive.

What should I bring?

A valid South Dakota hunting license, a blaze orange cap, eye protection, and your own ammunition for the pheasant hunt. Bring your dogs if you'd like to run them, and dress for South Dakota weather — September and March look nothing alike out here.

Where are you located?

21796 Elk Vale Rd., Piedmont, SD 57769 — on a 3,000-acre private ranch about ten miles north of Rapid City, bordering the Pete Lien Sports Shooting Complex.

Can we shoot clays the same day?

Yes, and it's the main reason people book full days with us. The Pete Lien Sports Shooting Complex is right next door with Olympic-style bunker trap, skeet, and a sporting clay course. See our Group & Corporate Events page.

What's your cancellation policy?

Should you need to cancel your booking, your deposit will be non-refundable. However, you can transfer your deposit to another available date at the discretion of the outfitter. The outfitter will make reasonable efforts to find a suitable alternative date, but rescheduling is not guaranteed and depends on availability.
