Our Story.
Started in 2025 on a working South Dakota ranch, with one idea: give people a place close to town where a day outside actually feels like one.
How Rapid Rooster got started.
Rapid Rooster was started in 2025. 2026 will be our first year as a state-approved pheasant preserve, which means we'll be open yearly from September 1st through March 31st.
We're located on the ranch that borders the new Pete Lien Shooting Complex, just ten miles north of Rapid City. The shooting complex offers world-class target shooting for shotguns — Olympic-style bunker trap, skeet, and a sporting clay course.
We offer half-day pheasant hunts just minutes from Rapid City. We're located in an area that has great pheasant cover but no natural pheasants, so all of our birds are bought next door from West River Ringnecks. We also have naturally raised sharp-tailed grouse that can be hunted along with the pheasants.
We're also currently building a flight pen for chukars. Our goal is to have chukars available to hunt by October.

This corner of South Dakota grows outstanding pheasant cover but holds no natural pheasant population — which is exactly why a preserve works so well here. Every rooster in the field is one we released for your hunt.
What is wild out here are the sharp-tailed grouse. They reproduce naturally on the ranch and can be taken alongside the pheasants, up to three per day.
